The Last Vampire

Theme: fantasy and sci-fi/fairy tale

One of the most horrifying stories from Žďár nad Sázavou has the aftertaste of human blood. According to historical sources, the last Czech vampire lived here. His name was Ulrich and he was a cruel administrator of the castle estate who terrified the inhabitants of Žďár even after his death. The most horrifying thing about the whole story is that it is probably not just an imaginary legend. In fact, the Jihlava Chronicle also mentions the horror story. This story is the last record of vampires in the Czech Republic.

Johann Alois Ulrich, the chief administrator of the Žďár estate, died on 22 February 1817, but his story did not end there. According to legend, a few days after his funeral he began to haunt the inhabitants of Žďár nad Sázavou. First he was seen by a hunter in the forest, later he scared people on the stone footbridge at the farmyard, where he physically attacked them. The Jihlava executioner had to exhume him, cut off his legs and head, into which he poured poppies to put an end to his rampage.

In reality, Ulrich was a contradictory figure of his time. Although he was unpopular among the people because of his enforcement of taxes and duties, he also set up a bakery in the town for the needy, gave away 8600 gold coins to the poor, founded a school for the poorest children and introduced potato cultivation.
