Jan Kubiš, hero of the Second Resistance from Trebic region. Born in Dolní Vilémovice. Years before he left for the army.

Jan Kubiš was born on 24 June 1913 in Dolní Vilémovice in the Třebíč district, in the family of a shoemaker František Kubiš and his wife Kristýna, née Mikysková. After finishing his schooling in his native village, he worked in agriculture and as a stoker in the local brickyard. On 1 October 1935 he started to serve as a soldier. 31 in Jihlava. Shortly afterwards he was sent to the non-commissioned officer school, which he completed with very good grades on 25 April 1936 and subsequently served with the 9th Infantry Company in Znojmo. On 1 October 1936 he was promoted to lance corporal and on 1 September 1937 to the rank of corporal.

He liked military life and decided to stay in the army. On the basis of a relevant application he was accepted for further voluntary active service as a longer-serving non-commissioned officer and on 15 October 1937 he was transferred to Regiment 34 in Opava. However, he served in the newly established guard battalion XIII in Jakartovice, which was directly subordinate to the regiment. In this unit, deployed to guard the construction of fortifications, he served as a squad leader, deputy platoon leader and commander of the guard detachment of the 3rd/XIIIrd guard company in Litultovice.

After the XIIIth Guard Battalion was reassigned to the Opava Infantry Regiment 15, he also served briefly as an instructor at the regimental NCO school in the spring of 1938. After Munich, his commitment to further voluntary active service was terminated on 19 October 1938. He therefore returned to Dolní Vilémovice and started working again as a stoker in the local brickyard.

However, he could not accept the Protectorate conditions. On 16 June 1939 he crossed the border into Poland.
