From the gallery of a tower, the castellan Oliva observes the everyday life of a small beautiful town. From that height, he can afford a tolerant view of the weaknesses and mistakes of his fellow citizens. The young teacher Robert is about to marry the teacher Julia. In his drawing class, Robert invites Olive to sit as a model. An old man tells the children about his life as a sailor and about meeting the love of his life, Diana, and her magical cat. Cheerful music comes from the square to accompany the arrival of a special circus. To the surprise of children and adults alike, a magician who looks indistinguishable from Olive and a beautiful girl, Diana, sit on the roof of a red car with a cat with sunglasses on her lap. At the end of the magician's evening performance, Diana takes off her Mourke's glasses and some of the adults begin to change colour in front of his green eyes. The infidels turn yellow, the liars turn purple, the thieves turn grey, and the lovers turn red. Even Robert, who has forgotten his unfaithful Juliet and fallen in love with Diana, is red. The Cat is taken over by three men who fear his magical powers - a hypocritical schoolmaster, a sycophantic janitor and a dishonest restaurant manager. Robert's pupils, fearing for the cat's life, flee the town and refuse to return until the animal is rescued. The children's coercion has the desired effect. Only Robert is very sad - after spending a loving night with Diana, the carriage with the girl, the cat and the magician leaves.
